What this tool does

Compute a SHA digest of text and compare byte-level results. Use it to check test vectors; it does not download or verify remote files.

How to use it

  1. Enter the text, retaining any spaces or line breaks that should be included.
  2. Select SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 and choose Generate hash.
  3. When comparing tools, match the algorithm, UTF-8 encoding and line endings.

Example

Text: abc
SHA-256: ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad

Limits and common mistakes

TextEncoder converts the input to UTF-8 before Web Crypto calculates the digest. Output is hexadecimal: SHA-256 produces 64 characters. A digest cannot be decrypted and is not a password storage scheme; passwords need a dedicated salted slow hash. A final newline changes the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is my data stored?

Local processing does not upload your input. Some tools, such as the notepad, save content or preferences in this browser; clearing site data removes that local storage. Usage counters are described in the privacy policy.
